This one-hour, print or online monograph provides Kentucky pharmacists and technicians with up-to-date information on the opioid epidemic and prescription opioid safety. Learners will gain a better understanding of opioid guidelines for acute and chronic pain, biopsychosocial approaches to pain management, risks of opioids and strategies for risk mitigation, and patient-centered opioid tapering. This activity aims to help the pharmacy team improve opioid safety and reduce the risk of opioid overdose for patients while managing pain effectively. Learners will gain practical strategies for discussing these topics with patients and other members of the healthcare team in efforts to give Kentucky communities the tools they need to combat opioid overdose deaths.

This ACPE-accredited continuing pharmacy education activity (UAN 0022-0000-23-009-H08-P/T) is designed to meet the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy continuing education regulatory requirement for pharmacists to complete 1 hour of CPE on the opioid epidemic or opioid use disorder as outlined in 201 KAR 2:015.

Monica Roberts, PharmD is an academic detailing pharmacist working with the HEALing Communities Study Kentucky. Dr. Roberts graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 2017 and completed the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Community Pharmacy Residency Program with the Kroger Louisville Division in 2018. She has over 6 years’ experience working in various roles in retail community pharmacies. Prior to her pharmacy career, she worked in journalism and publishing as a copy editor, page designer, and technical writer.

- Recognize high-risk opioid prescriptions
- Review strategies for addressing opioid risks, including safe medication disposal
- Describe why and how pharmacies should dispense naloxone
